Research Interests

My research interests include animal remains and different aspects of the significance of animals for human communities in the past, especially in the Palaeolithic, Mesolithic and Neolithic. Concerning Pleistocene fauna, my main focus of study are mammal remains from cave deposits and the insights they offer on the dating of sediments from which they originate, the reconstruction of environmental conditions, and taphonomic processes that occur in caves once occupied by humans and various animal species. In my studies of the Mesolithic and Neolithic, I have mostly focused on the transition between the two periods and the early stages of animal domestication. My additional research interests include archaeomalacology, especially the use and exchange networks of ornaments made from marine mollusc shells (including fossil shells) in prehistory.
